TAMPA - Seventh Avenue is no Bourbon Street.
But the Ybor City thoroughfare has gained fame in its own right: It has been named to the top 10 list of "Great Streets in America" by the American Planning Association.
The award was based on Seventh Avenue's history, distinctive character and strong community engagement. The avenue, known for annual events such as Guavaween and Gasparilla, encompasses the 11 blocks between Nick Nuccio Parkway and 26th Street.
Other top streets named this year include Main Street in Annapolis, Md.; Washington Street in Boston; and South El Paso Street in El Paso, Texas. The streets were not ranked.
Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and other dignitaries will attend a brief ceremony and sign unveiling marking the avenue's top 10 designation. The event will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Rough Riders' Park, on the corner of Seventh Avenue and 13th Street.
The American Planning Association, a professional organization representing the field of city and regional planning in the United States, releases a list of great streets annually.
