TALLAHASSEE - Head-hunter Louis Givens had just delivered a tackle on Florida State's kickoff when he realized somebody else's name had been called over the public announcement system at Carter-Finley Stadium.
The North Carolina State stat crew, apparently working off an older roster, did not have a Louis Givens No. 89 on its sheet. The walk-on's three tackles went down under "team" at the time.
"It's OK," Givens said. "Like I say, I'm happy to be here."
Givens, a special-teams participant and wide receiver, is no longer playing in anonymity.
The smallish but lightning-quick Givens has quite a following because of his play on special teams this season. Givens made a touchdown-saving tackle in the Miami game. He ranks in the top 20 in team tackles with 11.
Offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher found reason to like Givens back in spring practice.
"The ability to be fearless," Fisher said. "To not care who he is going against. When he had his opportunity, he played full speed."
