4,000 Seek 40 Med School Seats At UCF

Hoping for a spot in the University of Central Florida's inaugural medical school class?

Good luck.

UCF officials announced Wednesday that they have received 4,000 applications for 40 available seats. That means applicants have a one in 100 chance of getting in by the time classes start in August.

Why so competitive? The Orlando university, with help from donors, is offering full scholarships worth $160,000 to each student in the medical school's first class.

Administrators say they're the first in the nation to provide full scholarships for an entire medical school class. They raised $7 million to make that happen.

Florida's Board of Governors, which oversees the state's 11 public universities, approved new medical schools for UCF and Florida International University in Miami in March 2006.
