Would Gladly Pay More

I am a 30-year reader of the Tampa Trib, having enjoyed - no, really loved - receiving my paper each morning. I used to look forward to Wednesday's paper with its nice thick food section and Saturday's Bay Life section with many articles and columns about home and garden.

Judy Hill's column helped so many needy people and charities in the Tampa Bay area. It was fun to read Daniel Ruth skewer the unlucky person or issue of the day. Rosemary Goudreau's editorial opinions have assisted me throughout many elections with thoughtful comment. It is with sadness that I have watched in the last two years the dismantling of this wonderful newspaper as it becomes a mere shadow of its former self.

With the loss of almost all the columnists (Steve, you're probably counting the days!) and myriad sections and in-depth articles, the paper is hardly worth reading any longer. I currently pay 40 cents per issue for home delivery. I would gladly pay double or even triple for the old version of the paper. Give me a good paper or give me nothing!

Ruth's Viewpoint Missed

Are you people crazy? Dan Ruth was the best part of the newspaper. I probably disagreed with him half the time but divergent (and articulate) views are the hallmark of a great paper. There has to be a better way to cut costs.

Don't Like Socialists

Liz Bleau's letter (Nov. 11) regarding the Confederate Memorial Battle Flag certainly begs for a response. I, too, was initially disappointed with the recent election results, representing a complete departure from the Founding Fathers' concept of limited government in a constitutional republic.

That slightly more than half the electorate chose to embrace Marxist socialism in the person of the new president would arouse anger in anyone deserving of the name, American.

I have a renewed pride at being a member of that "small group" of slightly less than half the electorate who choose to be left behind with the legacy our Founders gave us, and for which so many have given their lives, while the "large majority" move on, like lemmings, toward socialist perdition.

Why Are They Selling?

Did anyone conduct a poll which asks stock owners why they are selling their stocks?

It's Obama's Market

Isn't it interesting to see how the stock market is reacting to the presidential election? If the market was going up I am sure we would be flooded with stories abou how positively the market responded to Obama's election. I find it a little strange that we are not hearing any of the Obama media talking about the effect of the election on the market.

Hang on, folks, it is going to be a wild and very rough ride. By the way, the old tired lie about it being Bush's fault won't work any more.

Hispanic Issues

Is your editorial (Nov. 11) implying that Hispanics voted for Obama because they support illegal immigration and amnesty? Are you saying that "the angry wing" of the Republican party is out of touch with the American people on this issue? A recent Zogby poll says "57 percent of voters stated that amnesty would harm American workers and further strain public resources, while only 26 percent believe amnesty would aid economic recovery and ease public burdens," It also states 54 percent of Hispanics listed the economy as their No. 1 concern and only 11 percent listed immigration.

Your article is way off base according to this study. Could it be most Hispanics made a protest vote based on the same issues as everyone else - their savings, paying the bills and keeping a job?

Restricting The Bailouts

In this horrific economy with so many taxpayers out of work, struggling with foreclosure, loss of retirement security, wildly flailing Wall Street and a host of other financial burdens, it really is a slap in the face when the government gives away our hard-earned money to big business.

American taxpayers are shouldering the burden for business greed and poor financial planning. What have these big banks and financial institutions done for American taxpayers? They have outsourced jobs to other countries.

Now Detroit is wanting a handout too? How about this for an answer: If a company needs taxpayer dollars to shore up their business, ask the company if they have given away jobs to other countries. If the answer is yes, then no deal.

No bailouts to sell-outs.
