I moved to Tampa five years ago and immediately fell in love with the Gandy Bridge Trail. I jogged and biked there almost daily. I brought family and friends there when they visited. I ran alongside dolphins. I talked to fishermen. I spoke with members of the association who saved the bridge when it was going to be torn down years ago.
All these people enjoyed the bridge trail that connected St. Pete and Tampa. In an era of making urban areas appealing to live in, it would be a mistake to lose this landmark.
Lots of money is being spent on Riverwalk in downtown Tampa. I look forward to its completion, but let's not lose a treasure we already have. I hope the Hillsborough County commissioners realize a half-million users a year can't be wrong and find a way to save the Friendship Trail bridge.
