A Bradenton elementary school was put on lockdown this afternoon when a man police say robbed a nearby bank led officers on a foot chase through school property, authorities said.

Officers responded to a robbery call at 2:15 p.m. at Bank of America, 4311 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton police Deputy Chief Jeffrey Lewis said in a statement.

Police say Edwin L. Love Jr., 45, handed a teller a note demanding money. After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, Love left on foot and headed near Jessie P. Miller Elementary School, located just south of the bank, Lewis said.

The school was immediately placed on lockdown. Officers saw Love as he ran onto school property and gave chase, Lewis said. The school resource officer and other officers caught Love and took him into custody.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.
