Upton Has Shoulder Surgery

Published: November 13, 2008

ST. PETERSBURG - Rays center fielder B.J. Upton should be healthy by the start of next season after having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder Tuesday, team executive vice president Andrew Friedman said Wednesday.

The procedure was performed in Birmingham, Ala., by renowned orthopedic surgeon James Andrews.

"Obviously, with the fact it was Tuesday, we don't have too much of an update other than to say we expect him to be ready during spring training and be in position to be in our Opening Day lineup."

Upton played with the tear through the season, and his power numbers suffered until the postseason, when he hit seven home runs and drove in 16 runs in 17 games. During the regular season, Upton hit .273 with nine home runs, 67 RBIs and 44 stolen bases.

Friedman said no decision has been made on whether pitcher Troy Percival will have surgery for his back and knee problems.

"We're still going through some tests and trying to look at different scans to come up with what we think is the best option for him - whether it's rest and rehab or whether it's surgery," Friedman said.

A'S-ROCKIES TRADE: Matt Holliday hardly could have expected to land with the low-budget Oakland Athletics.

The A's completed their trade with the Colorado Rockies for the star outfielder Wednesday, securing the big bat Oakland sought for the middle of its order.

Colorado received righty reliever Huston Street, lefty starter Greg Smith and promising outfielder Carlos Gonzalez from the A's. The clubs reached a tentative agreement Monday, but had to wait for results of physicals and other details to be worked out.

YANKEES: Left-hander Damaso Marte agreed to a $12 million, three-year contract that includes a club option for 2012.

MLB NETWORK: Former major-leaguers Al Leiter and Harold Reynolds have been hired as studio analysts.
