FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Former Jesuit High kicker Jay Feely kicked a 34-yard field goal in overtime as the New York Jets beat the New England Patriots 34-31 to take over sole possession of first place in the AFC East.
The Jets blew a 24-6 first-half lead and a 31-24 fourth-quarter advantage at Gillette Stadium before pulling out their second win in the past 12 meetings against the Patriots.
The Jets overcame an outstanding performance by Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel, who was 30 of 51 for 400 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran eight times for 62 yards.
Former Bucs running back Thomas Jones ran for 104 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries for the Jets.
FALCONS: Michael Vick's bankruptcy attorneys say the imprisoned NFL quarterback expects to return to football.
Attorneys wrote in a disclosure statement that Vick "has every reason to believe" he will be reinstated by the NFL once he completes a 23-month sentence for a federal dogfighting conviction last summer. The attorneys filed the statement before a hearing Thursday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Virginia.
Vick still has a contract with the Atlanta Falcons. But NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would have final say on his return.
The attorneys also lay out a plan for Vick to pay his creditors based on his expected NFL earnings and possible signing bonuses.
LIONS: Detroit cut quarterback Drew Henson, parting ways with the former Michigan quarterback and New York Yankees prospect. Detroit replaced Henson on the roster with Adam Jennings to bolster their special teams.
RAIDERS: Wide receiver Javon Walker is scheduled to undergo ankle surgery and will likely miss the remainder of the season.
No official announcement was made, but Walker told reporters Thursday his season is over after injuring his left ankle during Oakland's 17-6 loss to Carolina on Sunday.
Walker was not at practice but walked into the Raiders locker room using a pair of crutches and wearing a high protective boot on his left foot.
RAMS: Steven Jackson's optimism after a full day of practice faded Thursday when the running back woke up and his thigh was stiff and sore.
After Jackson watched practice in sweats, Coach Jim Haslett figured the Rams would be without their feature back for the third time in four weeks.
"I doubt if we'll have him, to be honest," Haslett said. "But we'll see. You never know."
REDSKINS: Clinton Portis' sprained knee showed no improvement Thursday, and the running back appears unlikely to play in Sunday night's game against the Cowboys.
The NFL's second-leading rusher left Redskins Park during practice, wearing a gray hooded sweat shirt and burgundy sweat pants as he stepped into his Maserati.
