Published: November 14, 2008

TAMPA - Where there's smoke, there'll be barbecued chicken and pork – at least in downtown Tampa on Saturday.

The Tampa Firefighters Museum, 720 E. Zack St., hosts its annual BBQ Cook-Off from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, with five teams of firehouse cooks serving up their best dishes.

Visitors can sample three dishes for $7; a $20 wristband entitles wearers to all they can drink, Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Jace Kohan said. All proceeds benefit the museum and Camp Hopetake, a summer camp for burn survivors.

The cooking crews compete for bragging rights and a $500 cash prize compiled from entry fees, Kohan said.

To tantalize taste buds, he persuaded the teams to share what they plan to make. Here are their dishes:

The reigning champs, The Cigar City Smokers from Fire Station 9 in West Tampa: pulled pork in vinegar sauce with barbecue smoked ribs.

The Krewe of Westshore, from Fire Station 8 in the Carver City/Lincoln Gardens area: barbecue pork and chicken.

The Old Bomberos, a group of retired firefighters (bomberos means "firemen" in Spanish): pork shoulder in barbecue sauce.

The Krewe of St. Florian (the patron saint of firefighters), made up of firefighters from several stations: smoked barbecue pork.

The Old One-Two, the crew from Fire Station 12 at West Hillsborough and North MacDill avenues: Polynesian pork and chicken.
