Marriage Amendment Foes To Rally in Tampa, St. Pete

TAMPA - Rallies by those who opposed Amendment 2, the so-called marriage-protection measure that won approval last week, will be held Saturday in Tampa and St. Petersburg.

Amendment 2 defines marriage as a legal union of a man and a woman and bans same-sex marriages. The measure won 62 percent of the vote in the Nov. 4 election, slightly more than the 60 percent required to amend the state constitution.

"We were very disappointed that six out of 10 of our neighbors chose to deny us a level playing field," said Cathy James, who is organizing the rally in Tampa.

The Tampa rally will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Joe Chillura Courthouse Square, 610 E. Kennedy Blvd.

The St. Petersburg rally will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Mirror Lake Park, at First Avenue and Sixth Street North.

The gay and lesbian community will join their allies in rallies across the country on Saturday to demonstrate a "solidarity for equality," James said.

Nationally, gay marriage bans were approved by voters in California and Arizona; in Arkansas, voters approved a measure to prevent same-sex couples from adopting.
