For one group of women, the Shops at Wiregrass is about more than bargain hunting. The new venue is also a great place for meeting friends, getting in shape and having fun.
Stroller Strides launched classes at the Wesley Chapel venue on Halloween. Instructor Sara Holt said the courses, designed for mothers, are full of power walking and various exercises that are meant to be performed with children in tow.
"We power walk for maybe a mile to a mile and a half," Holt said. "We also stop and do stations where we target each of the muscle groups and we keep the kids entertained by singing to them. We use the stroller, things in the environment and even each other. I try to make it a point of changing the exercises each time so there is a nice variety."
Suzette Strom of Dade City said she is attending the class with her 15-month-old daughter, Stella, because she likes the workout and the other moms.
"I want to get in shape, and I like being around the other moms," Strom said. "Also, Stella loves the other kids, so it is a perfect combination of working out and socialization. I also joined for the play groups and the monthly moms' night out."
Mary Lian of Tampa and her 3-month-old son Ethan attend the class because it keeps her motivated.
"I think it is beneficial to work out with a group because it is hard to get motivated when you are on your own," Lian said. "Also, I am a first-time mom, so it is good for me to be able to talk to the other moms."
The class meets at 9 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday at the center court in the new mall. The first class is free, and the program offers different levels of membership after that.
