TAMPA - Berkeley Prep is going to the Class 3A volleyball state semifinals for the fourth year in a row.
"Now that we've won it, it feels great," Berkeley Prep coach Randy Dagostino said after his team claimed its 17th region championship with a 25-6, 25-14, 25-21 win against Melbourne Central Catholic in the 3A-Region 3 final. "It's a special group of a lot of people contributing special talents."
Juniors Lindsay Young and Chelsea Parker and freshman Jordan Burgess powered the aggressive Berkeley attack with 10 kills each in the three-game sweep. Freshman Mackenzie Dagostino added seven kills.
Burgess' first five kills came in the first game. "She hit some monster balls in the first game," Coach Dagostino said.
Burgess drilled the ball to all parts of the court and controlled her serve that seemed to sink straight down the moment it went over the net.
Young took over the second set, recording three kills and two blocks.
Even though Berkeley Prep led the second game 22-8, MCC closed with a bit of a rally and carried the momentum to the third game.
After falling behind 7-2, the Hustlers scored five points in a row to tie the game and eventually took a 9-8 lead. MCC never created a rhythm with its serves and couldn't create a comfortable lead.
"We have athletic tall people and athletic short people. It's hard to score on us," Coach Dagostino said. "We were hanging around and playing OK. When we had to make a solid play we made a solid play."
