BRANDON - Brandon jumped to an early five-point lead in the first game of Saturday's Class 5A-Region 2 final against Winter Park Lake Howell before the Silver Hawks roared back for a 25-21, 25-8, 25-20 win, ending the Eagles' season.
In the second game, Lake Howell strung together two runs of eight straight points while defending the net and taking advantage of open space in the Eagles defense.
"We threw it in," Eagles coach Amy Watson said. "We beat ourselves, kicked ourselves while we were down."
In the third game, the Silver Hawks again jumped to a sizable lead at 11-3, but the Eagles showed some resiliency, closing the gap to one point. But the comeback came too late as Lake Howell held on and closed out the match.
Watson said the match wasn't what she expected from her team and it was eerily similar to the Eagles' loss in the region final to Lake Howell last season.
"It was the same thing that happened last year," Watson said. "It was really unfortunate because we are a better team then we were last year."
Sophomore Lindsey Watson had five kills and 10 digs for the Eagles.
RECRUITING: Watson also said Brandon senior outside hitter Sydney Klemp has verbally committed to South Florida Community College.
