BRADENTON - There will be a new Class 1A state volleyball champion this season and it could be Bradenton Christian.
Bradenton Christian toppled Bayshore Christian, the defending state champion, 25-15, 25-22, 25-18, on Saturday in the Class 1A-Region 3 final.
Bradenton Christian advances to the state Final Four for the second time in three years.
Bradenton Christian will play Friday at The Lakeland Center.
"It's amazing," said Bradenton Christian's Sarah Geraldson. "There is no way to describe it."
Two years ago, Bradenton Christian also beat Bayshore Christian to reach the state Final Four, where it lost in three games.
It was the second time Bradenton Christian defeated the Faith Warriors this season.
Bayshore Christian has been a Class 1A powerhouse in recent years.
"It's heartbreaking not to finish with your best game," Bayshore Christian coach Melanie Humenansky said. "I'm proud of our girls for playing to the end."
The first win this season was in five games. This time it was in three, but the match was not without tense moments.
The first game was tied at 14 before Bradenton Christian broke it open with an impressive run.
"Winning that first game was very important," Bradenton Christian coach Greg Geraldson said.
