WINTER HAVEN - Tyler Greathouse won the boys individual title in leading Berkeley Prep to the boys team title Saturday at the Class 1A-Region 3 cross country meet at Polk Community College.
Greathouse won his first regional title with a 17:01.02. Teammate Karl Stonesifer, who beat Greathouse last week for the district title, finished second with a 17:01.82.
"It's my first win ever," said Greathouse. "It was a little hot. I have made it every year to state. The course felt fast but the time was slow."
Both showed teamwork in finishing 1-2.
"We were working together and it looks like he had just a little extra to sprint with," said Stonesifer. "We both worked hard together. I was very pleased with the outcome. It's a good day. It the course was a little long. It was a great race. We ran for place and got it."
Their coach was flashing some major ivories after the race.
"It's as good as we hoped for," said Berkeley Prep coach Eileen Daly. "The really nice thing is that they pushed each other. Last week, Karl won. Karl made Tyler beat him. They can flip-flop like that but they make each other work for it. There's no give me."
As expected, Berkeley Prep's boys won the regional title with 53 points. Naples Community School was a close five points behind in second. Tampa Prep finished seventh with 156 and out of the running for state.
The top 15 individuals and the top six teams advance to the 1A state meet Saturday at Little Everglades Ranch in Pasco County.
Berkeley Prep's Olivia D'Angelo said she had breathing problems and finished 33rd with a time of 21:51.
Berkeley Prep's girls finished eighth with 198 and thus will not compete at the state meet this year after qualifying nine times in a row.
The boys have made it to state six times in a row.
Tampa Prep's girls were ninth with 216.
