ST. PETERSBURG - In the end, it was the team with the 15 state championship trophies that found a way to win.
Tampa Prep (15-13), down two sets to none, refused to go quietly and clawed back to win the Class 2A-Region 3 volleyball title against host Northside Christian (23-7) on Saturday afternoon. The Terrapins lost the first two sets, 25-22, 26-24, and then roared back to win, 25-8, 25-18, 15-10. The Terrapins are rewarded with a trip to the state tournament in Lakeland.
There were standout performances on both sides. For Tampa Prep, Alena Ransom had 23 kills and eight blocks, Dana Malinowski had 15 kills and 21 digs, Bricka McGriff added 12 kills, Caroline Dillabough had 52 assists and Kane Krueger added six blocks. For the Mustangs, Callie Hasko had 25 kills, Jennica Mullins had six kills and Tiffany Boyer had 33 digs.
"The players talked to each other when they were down," said Tampa Prep coach Mike Flynn, who credited his players for keeping their spirits up. "We have dealt with tough situations all season and those 13 losses showed us how to keep fighting. We knew we were able to come back. We have faced brick walls before."
"It was a tough loss," Northside Christian coach Holey Filer said. "This is an outstanding group and they really fought all the way. We were not blown out."
