ST. PETERSBURG - One person is dead after a car crash this morning that has closed 22nd Avenue South between 20th Street South and 27th Street South., police said.
A Chevrolet Suburban traveling west on 22nd Avenue and a Pontiac Firebird traveling south on 22nd Street collided at the intersection of those roads before 2 a.m. today, detectives said. The Suburban skidded into a power poll and flipped onto its roof, police said.
The impact caused a power line to fall onto the Firebird, which caused the car to catch on fire, police said.
Firefighters put out the fire, then found a body in the back of the car. The person may be the driver, police said.
The driver of the Suburban has not been found.
Police have closed the area to traffic while they investigate. The road will remain closed until the power line and utility pole are repaired.
