TAMPA - Hector Sastre was walking to a store near Hillsborough and Himes avenues Monday afternoon when he heard gunfire and saw people running from a nearby laundry.
"You could actually see the flashes of gunfire," Sastre said.
Police say the shooter was the victim of a carjacking outside of the laundromat and fired into his own vehicle after a man and a woman tried to drive away with it.
The Lexus then swerved into oncoming traffic and crashed into two other vehicles, Tampa police Lt. Brian Dugan said. The drivers and passengers of those vehicles suffered minor injuries, police say.
The carjacking victim and the assailants then ran from the scene, Dugan said.
The shooter was found after nearly an hour and taken into custody for questioning, Dugan said. Police are searching for the woman; the man who was with her was shot in the shoulder and taken to a local hospital, where he is in stable condition, Dugan said.
The carjacking victim met the man and the woman at the laundromat at Hillsborough and Himes avenues, authorities say. The victim offered to give the two a ride, but when they entered the car, they pushed him out and tried to take the vehicle, Dugan said.
