A St. Petersburg couple was arrested Sunday afternoon after a robbery and shooting at a flea market, Pinellas County deputies say.
The robbery victim was shot in the ankle but didn't suffer life-threatening injuries.
Investigators arrested 20-year-old Emanuel LaTorre and 18-year-old Aspyn Helle-Smith. The couple was charged with armed robbery.
The incident began about 3:54 p.m. at the Wagon Wheel Flea Market, 7801 Park Blvd. in unincorporated Pinellas, deputies say. LaTorre and Helle-Smith saw a man with a lot of money, investigators say. Helle-Smith went to the flea market's parking lot and waited in LaTorre's 1994 Lincoln Continental, and LaTorre followed the man, deputies say. LaTorre took out a handgun and told the man to give him the money, deputies say.
The man turned quickly, and LaTorre shot him in the left ankle, deputies say. LaTorre took the cash and items the man bought at the flea market, running to the Lincoln, deputies say.
LaTorre and Helle-Smith were arrested shortly after 4 p.m. near East Bay Drive and Fourth Street Northeast in Largo. Deputies recovered the victim's property, as well as a handgun.
The victim was taken to Bayfront Medical Center.
The investigation is ongoing.
