TAMPA - Civic leaders in Ybor City are drawing a line in the asphalt on Seventh Avenue.
They've had enough of the nightclubs and are gearing up to fight the most recent request from a property owner to open up a new hot spot along the entertainment thoroughfare.
Board members of the Historic Ybor City Neighborhood Civic Association said they are not opposed to the existing nightclubs on Seventh Avenue, but they don't want any more.
"The nightclubs on this block are already too much for police and code enforcement to handle due to queuing issues and crime," board members said in a statement. "This is not sustainable or attractive for our main street and central business district."
The board wants to see more restaurants and retail stores along Seventh Avenue.
"The answer is not to increase the number of nightclubs but rather increase the number of stores and restaurants," board members said in the statement.
They've asked members of the community to voice their opposition to the city council, which on Thursday is scheduled to vote on a requested wet-zoning permit that would give the business's owner approval to sell alcohol.
The property owner, Sussex Holdings II LLC, of West Sussex, England, want to open a club at Seventh and North 17th Street, in the former Club Shine building.
A local representative for the owner could not immediately be reached for comment.
