ST. PETERSBURG - The Tampa Bay Rays will unveil their 2009 ticket prices this afternoon, and it likely will cost more to watch the defending American League champions in person.
Some increase in admission prices is expected, considering the Rays are coming off what was by far the most successful season in franchise history. It's just a question of how much the Rays can afford to push costs when they are still trying to solidify their fan base in difficult economic times.
The Rays' 2008 average ticket price was $17.23, the fourth-lowest in major league baseball. Only the Arizona Diamondbacks ($15.96), Atlanta Braves ($17.05) and Pittsburgh Pirates ($17.07) charged less on average last season, according to an annual survey by the Chicago-based Team Marketing Report.
The report's Fan Cost Index, which factors in everything from ticket prices to how much a beer costs in attempting to establish an estimated cost for a family of four to attend a game, rated the Rays the best value in baseball last year at a total of $136.91. The Boston Red Sox were at the other end of the spectrum, at $320.71.
