TALLAHASSEE - Bobby Bowden wasn't making any excuses Sunday about a tough homecoming loss to Boston College.
The 79-year-old Florida State coach has been around a lot more victories (380) than losses (122) during his long career and he knows a whuppin' when he sees one.
"They put one on us," Bowden said about a 27-17 defeat Saturday night to Boston College. "The game was more of them beating us than anything else. They physically beat us."
Boston College jumped to a 14-0 lead and never trailed to further jumble a wild race for the Atlantic Division title in the scrambled Atlantic Coast Conference, where nine schools still have mathematical chances to make the Dec. 6 title game in Tampa.
Florida State (7-3, 4-3) once again needs help, while Boston College (7-3, 3-3) would win the division if it can defeat Wake Forest and No. 22 Maryland the next two weeks.
The Seminoles, who dropped out of the Top 25, must win at Maryland (7-3, 4-2) Saturday or else forget about Tampa and finish the regular season against the third-ranked Florida Gators, who are playing as well as anybody in the country.
"If you ever want to play your best, it would be this weekend," Bowden said.
