Werner's Shooting Leads UF To Victory

GAINESVILLE - Throughout his tenure at Florida, forward Dan Werner has been known as a hustle player.

Things have changed this season, though, as Werner led the Gators with 17 points - and four of six shooting from 3-point range - in No. 19 Florida's 81-58 win against Bradley on Sunday.

It was the second consecutive game in which Werner led the Gators in scoring. After a disappointing year behind the line a year ago, this is a welcome sight for Werner.

"I was building houses last season," Werner said.

With the loss of its best post scorer Marreese Speights to the NBA, Florida will have to depend on its outside shooting if they hope want to make the NCAA Tournament. They did just that as they rained down 14 3's to Bradley's seven.

Thirty-two of the Gators' 65 shots came from behind the arc, a ratio Coach Billy Donovan isn't thrilled with, but will accept in a victory.

"I'd like us to find more of a presence close to the basket," Donovan said. "Not necessarily having a guy we throw the ball into in the post, but even if it's spreading the floor and having guys get to the basket."

USF Women Win Own Tourney

Six players in double figures - led by Jazmine Sepulveda's 14 points - led the South Florida women's basketball team (2-0) to an easy 94-46 victory against Loyola (Md.) in the championship game of the USF Shootout.

Tournament MVP Janae Stokes and Melissa Dalembert each added 13 points, while Jasmine Wynne, Alexis Givands and Shantia Grace added 12, 11 and 10 respectively. In addition to Stokes, Givands and Wynne were named to the all-tournament team.

VALDOSTA STATE 55, TAMPA 27: Freshman Sczeny Harty scored a game-high 21 points to lead host Valdosta State (2-0) to an easy victory against Tampa (1-1) in the Manwell Produce Classic.

Tampa - which was led by Tiara Cook's seven points and Caitlyn Mitryk's eight rebounds - shot just 23.5 percent from the field (8-for-34) and 7.1 percent from 3-point range (1-for-14).

FSU 81, FLA. GULF COAST 62: Tanae Davis-Cain and Jacinta Monroe combined for 33 points, including 21 in the second half, as No. 21 Florida State turned back a furious FGC (1-1) rally for a season-opening victory at home.

WISCONSIN-GREEN BAY 63, MIAMI 61: Despite 19 points by freshman Shenise Johnson, Miami (1-1) fell at home to Wisconsin-Green Bay (2-0).
