ZEPHYRHILLS - The mural looks like a portrait of life here, an 8 foot-by-2 foot hand-printed acrylic work with at least two dozen symbols of Zephyrhills.
It came out of Don Hencke's art class at the Community Aging and Retirement Services' Zephyrhills Senior Center. The work is intended as an artistic display and a tribute to the city.
"It just came to me one day. I thought it would be interesting to see all the various techniques of artists in my class and thought it would give something for the people of Zephyrhills to look at." Eight artists in Hencke's class spent more than a year painting the mural. It depicts hallmarks of Zephyrhills: high-flying skydivers, representing Skydive City; Zephyr Park and the city's water park; the train depot; the old-time clock on Fifth Avenue; and a bottle of Zephyrhills Spring Water. Zephyrhills Rotary and Music and Motorcycles, one of the events for which the city has become known, are also part of the mix.

Board May Block Charter School
LAND O' LAKES - A proposed charter school that would target high school dropouts may have to delay its plans.
The Pasco County School Board is scheduled to vote on the charter school's application today, and the school district staff is recommending the board turn down the proposal from Fort Lauderdale-based Mavericks in Education.
The school management company's application raised a number of concerns, said Nancy Scowcroft, the district's charter school supervisor.
One of the district's chief worries is that it appears the school's governing board would have minimal oversight over the school's finances, she said.
Mark Thimming, president and CEO for Mavericks in Education, expressed disappointment the school board might reject the application.
Pinellas County has approved the proposed school there, but Hernando County rejected the company's application. Thimming said his company plans to appeal the Hernando decision.

The public will be asked to comment on where transit service should be located and which transportation modes are best for each route. The workshop is one of several across the region scheduled through Thursday.
The authority is developing a wide-ranging transportation plan for seven counties: Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Citrus, Hernando, Manatee and Sarasota.

Water Main Break Alters Traffic
TAMPA - A water main break Monday morning prompted the city to close a section of MacDill Avenue from Wallace and Tyson avenues, city utility officials said.
Northbound traffic on MacDill was diverted around the affected area at Wallace, and southbound traffic is being detoured at Tyson, officials said.
Repairs were expected to be completed Monday, but officials said resurfacing the road could take several days. Signs and barricades will assist with traffic flow.
