The driver of a stolen Ford Explorer drove off at speeds greater than 85 mph when a Hillsborough County deputy tried stopping him at Causeway Boulevard and 78th Street on Monday night, deputies say.

The Ford ran into a ditch, and the deputy caught the driver, Jeremiah Washington, about 80 yards from the SUV.

Washington, 25, of Orlando, had a loaded handgun between the passenger seat and center console between him and his passenger, William Tilme.

Washington was charged with auto theft, fleeing, resisting arrest without violence and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He also was charged with burglary of an unoccupied conveyance and driving without a valid license.

Tilme, 19, of Orlando, was charged with auto theft, obstructing or opposing an officer without violence, being a felon in possession of a firearm and burglary of an unoccupied conveyance.

Tilme and Washington were in Orient Road Jail today. Tilme's bail was set at $19,500; Washington's was set at $27,250.
