Polk Detention Officer Hit With DUI Charge

A Polk County sheriff's detention lieutenant was charged with driving under the influence this morning after deputies saw his car swerving and hitting curbs on Cypress Gardens Boulevard in Winter Haven, authorities said.

Anthony Eugene Lawrence, 48, was stopped at 1:20 a.m. near U.S. 27 and failed a sobriety test, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Lawrence was hired in April 1984 as a detention deputy and was promoted to sergeant in August 1991, sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Eleazer said in a statement. Lawrence was promoted to lieutenant in December 1993. He was assigned to the Central County Jail.

Lawrence has been suspended without pay pending termination proceedings, Eleazer said.

Lawrence was released from Polk County Jail today after posting $500 bail.
