5 PLAYERS TO WATCH

THE STUFFER

Abby Alger, Freedom, C, Senior, 6-2: Alger was one of the state's leaders in blocked shots last season with 119, an average of 4.3 per game. Alger, one of only two senior starters returning this season for the Patriots, has taken on a bigger leadership role on the court.

THE LEADER

Katie Davis, Academy of the Holy Names, G, Senior, 5-7: Davis led the county in scoring last season, averaging 21.5 points per game. She also led her team with an average of 8.3 rebounds per game. Davis knows how to manage the game. She is Ivy League bound, having verbally committed to Penn.

THE UNDERDOG

Shalisia Hall, Hillsborough, G, Senior, 5-6: Hall wasn't far behind Katie Davis among the county's leading scorers, averaging 19.5 points per game, which included a season-high 28 against Gaither. Hall led the Terriers with 44 3-pointers last year and was second on the team with an average of 3.5 assists per game.

THE NEW KID IN TOWN

Amber Henson, Sickles, F, Sophomore, 6-4: Henson and her brother, North Carolina commit John Henson, moved to the Bay area this summer from Texas. Henson's got offers from Duke, North Carolina and Texas - to name a few - and her style of play will draw a lot of national attention to the area.

THE SHOOTER

Michelle Taylor, Plant, G/F, Junior, 5-8: Taylor led her team with 16.6 points per game last season and was second on the team with 45 3-pointers. Taylor showed off her versatility as a sophomore, averaging 7.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.

5 TEAMS TO WATCH

Academy of the Holy Names

The Class 3A-District 11 runner-ups lost to Dunbar in the regional quarterfinals last season. This small team always seems to find a way to make the postseason.

Jefferson

The Dragons made the postseason last year, finishing second to Plant in the Class 5A-District 10. Jefferson lost to Clearwater in the regional quarterfinals, but returns a lot of talent from that squad to make another postseason run.

Plant

The defending Class 5A-District 10 champions fell by three points to Clearwater in the regional semifinals last year. The Panthers are poised for another playoff push.

Sickles

Three points are also what kept the Gryphons from advancing further in the playoffs last season. The defending Class 6A-District 7 champions lost to Sarasota Riverview, 61-58, in the regional semifinals and are looking to avenge that loss.

Tampa Catholic

The Crusaders warmed up with preseason victories against Plant and Jefferson, serving notice that they could challenge Academy of the Holy Names and St. Pete Catholic for one of the Class 3A-District 11 postseason spots.
