TALLAHASSEE - A huge demand for Florida's freshwater turtles in Asia is sparking a debate over harvest limits.
Scientists say turtle populations could be in danger as tens of thousands of turtles are caught and shipped to Asia. State wildlife officials have set a temporary limit of 20 turtles per day for each licensed hunter, but scientists said at a news conference Wednesday those limits don't go far enough.
Biologist Matt Aresco says species like the Florida soft-shell may not be able to sustain themselves. He and others want a ban on commercial harvesting of wild turtles.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is holding a hearing Thursday to hear from both sides of the issue.
