NEW PORT RICHEY – Sickles held host Mitchell to zero shots in the first half and goalkeeper Brandon Stout needed only three saves in the second half as the Gryphons dominated the Mustangs 3-1 in Class 6A-District 7 action Tuesday at Mitchell Stadium.
Sickles (1-1, 1-0 6A-7) got first-period goals from Gus Moraes (17th minute), Sebastian Matta (23rd minute) and Boris Simeunovic (33rd minute) as the Gryphons outshot Mitchell 12-0 in the first 40 minutes.
"We controlled the game today," Sickles coach Antonio Calvo said. "We kept the ball on the ground. Mitchell's a very tall team. We did well in the first half. I'm not happy at all with the second half. We dominated the first half."
In the second half, Mitchell finally got some shots on Stout and in the 59th minute, Juan Orrego sent a rebound past Stout to break the shutout. But the Mustangs (2-2, 0-1) couldn't get any closer. A shot by David Vasquez that went into the net in the 74th minute was ruled offside and that was as close as the Mustangs would get to scoring.
Sickles outshot the Mustangs 23-7 in the match. Mitchell goalkeeper Robbie Wallace made 12 saves.
"That probably was the worst half of soccer we've played this season," Mitchell coach Oscar Ebillus said. "Even the simple things like passing just weren't there. The second half was 20 times better. The good thing it's only one game. The bad thing is it's a district game. But out district is so level in talent anybody can win. Hopefully we'll beat [Sickles] if we get another chance."
The 6A-7 district plays a single round-robin schedule so the next time they could meet is in the district tournament.
