Garrey Deon Gibson continued resisting arrest Tuesday night even after being zapped by a Taser, Hillsborough County deputies say.
About 9:50 p.m. at Symmes Road and North Street in Gibsonton, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Gibson. They saw him put a green leafy substance into his mouth, and they believed it was marijuana.
He didn't comply with their commands, and he struck both deputies to avoid arrest, a criminal arrest affidavit states.
According to the affidavit:
Gibson struck one deputy in the chest, knocking him to the ground and causing a bruise to his left knee. He grabbed the other deputy's jacket, pinning him to the ground.
A deputy deployed a Taser twice to subdue Gibson, who continued resisting. The deputy then "utilized baton strikes" to Gibson's arm and leg.
Gibson then complied with deputies and was arrested about 10 p.m.
After Gibson's arrest, deputies found a straw in his right front pocket and a clear baggie inside his car. Gibson told deputies he used the straw to snort Xanax, deputies say.
Gibson, 30, of Gibsonton, was charged with two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence and one count each of tampering with evidence, obstructing or opposing an officer without violence and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He remained in Orient Road Jail today. His bail was set at $11,000.
