NEW PORT RICHEY – Mitchell's girls soccer team jumped out to an early 3-1 lead and held on for a 3-2 Class 6A-District 7 win against Sickles on Tuesday at Mitchell Stadium.
The Mustangs (3-0, 2-0 6A-7) got two goals from forward Arielle Anahory and another from Marisa Russo after the Gryphons' CiCi Gonzalez scored in the 9th minute.
The Gonzalez goal seemed to give Mitchell a wakeup call.
"You never know at the beginning of the season what the team you're facing is like," Mitchell coach Karl Kukec said. "This was only our third game. We played Alonso and they played an entirely different type of game. It's a learning process but I'm happy to be 2-0 in the district."
Sickles (0-2-1, 0-1) did everything it could to tie and possibly win the game in the final seven minutes. After Taylor Valley cut the Mitchell lead to 3-2 with a goal in the 59th minute, Jessica Morejon hit the crossbar in the 71st minute, Mary Raimo hit the right post in the 73rd minute and Gonzalez chipped a shot over the net in the 76th minute.
"We played a lot better in the second half," Sickles coach George Arroyo said. "We used a new formation in the first half and it didn't work. We went back to our old formation in the second half and they played a lot better."
Sickles outshot Mitchell 10-3 in the second half and 14-9 for the game.
