An 87-year-old Lakeland man died following a crash this morning in Polk County.
Vincent F. Strawbridge died, and his passenger, 87-year-old Marion Strawbridge, was seriously injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
He was driving a 1994 Cadillac east on State Road 60 in the outside lane east of Bonnie Mine Road about 3:35 a.m. Meanwhile, a 2005 flatbed tractor-trailer carrying wood products was heading east on State Road 60 in the outside lane.
The tractor-trailer, driven by 58-year-old James Brock of Lutz, had stopped at an active railroad crossing signal because of a passing train, troopers say.
Strawbridge didn't stop, instead swerving right to avoid a crash, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release. Instead, the Cadillac struck the right rear side of the tractor-trailer.
Strawbridge died about 7:30 a.m., and Marion Strawbridge was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
Brock wasn't injured.
