ST. LEO - Hoping to grasp the suffering of others, a few Saint Leo University students are nearing the end of a 24-hour fast intended to raise money for orphaned children in Haiti.

The fast is a project by the university's Haitian Education Project, which helps support the Marie Pont du Ciel Orphanage in Cap Haitian on the Caribbean island's northern coast.

Since the fast began Tuesday evening, HEP members have raised about $100 in donations from other students. They have asked people to donate $5, enough to feed a single orphan for a week, HEP members said.

The students will host a feast outside the university's student activities building at 7 p.m. today to break their fast. The menu includes popular Haitian dishes, including baked barbecued chicken, black rice and Haitian pickliz, a dish of pickled cabbage and other vegetables.

The feast is free and open to the public

Saint Leo University is on State Road 52, about three miles east of Interstate 75 in northeast Pasco County.
