CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Deon Thompson scored a career-high 20 points to help top-ranked North Carolina beat Kentucky 77-58 on Tuesday night despite playing yet again without national player of the year Tyler Hansbrough.
Wayne Ellington had 16 points for the Tar Heels (2-0), who led by double figures barely four minutes into the game and never looked back in a matchup of the winningest programs in men's college basketball.
Patrick Patterson had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Wildcats (0-2), who finished with 28 turnovers in their second straight mistake-prone performance.
UT WINS OPENER: Five players scored in double figures as the University of Tampa opened its season with a 107-53 victory against visiting Puerto Rico-Cayey.
Johnathan Ball scored 22 points and Rashad Callaway added 21 for the Spartans.
Women's Games
USF ROLLS: Jazmine Sepulveda scored 24 points with six assists while Shantia Grace had 19 points, five assists and two steals as the University of South Florida to a 104-55 victory against Stetson.
Stetson sophomore guard Brittany Carannante of Clearwater scored a season-high nine points.
SPARTANS WIN: The University of Tampa women (2-1) cruised to an 80-21 victory against University of Puerto Rico-Cayey (0-3) in the Spartans' home opener.
The Spartans were never challenged, opening the game with a 9-0 run and leading 51-7 at the half.
UT was led by freshman guard Sarah Wickham, who scored 17 points.
FSU WINS: Jacinta Moore scored 21 points and Tanae Davis-Cain added 15 to help No. 22 Florida State (2-0) earned a 60-49 victory against the University of North Florida (0-2).
