ST. PETERSBURG - A 28-year-old St. Petersburg man was killed this morning when he lost control of his car on the Fourth Street North exit off Interstate 275, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Leif A. Nissen was driving a 2003 BMW south on the interstate when he turned onto the exit ramp about 3:10 a.m., the patrol said. The car went up onto a grass shoulder, and the right-front tire blew out, the patrol said.
Nissen lost control of the car, and it veered back onto the exit ramp, crossed the ramp and struck a guardrail before continuing down an embankment and striking several trees and bushes, the patrol said. The BMW then overturned, striking a palm tree, and Nissen was thrown from the car.
Nissen, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers are trying to determine whether alcohol was a factor.
