COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - The Hillsborough Community College women's volleyball team defeated Frank Phillips College, 25-18, 25-22, 30-32, 25-17, on Thursday to advance to the second round of the NJCAA Division I National Championships.
Sophomore outside hitter Emily Calderon-Reyes led all players with 23 kills along with 11 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Nallelis Sanfeliz-Ramirez added 16 kills and six digs, while sophomore outside hitter Le'Derrianne Golden put away 10 kills. Freshman setter Lindsey Rees had 48 assists and on defense, freshman libero Isell Torres-Eleutiza recorded 10 digs.
"I thought we came out a little out of sync, but they seemed to stay calm and poised," HCC coach Gary Larkin. "A lot of my freshman, this is new for them, but I thought the team did a good job of bending but not breaking."
Hillsborough will face No. 1 seed Iowa Western Community College Friday.
