Oldsmar Driver Charged With DUI-Manslaughter

TAMPA - A 35-year-old Oldsmar man was arrested Wednesday afternoon on a DUI-manslaughter charge.

Kevin Michael Smith, 35, was arrested in connection with an April 19 crash that led to the death of Vickie D. Colonna, 43, of Tampa

Smith, of 213 Bay Arbor Woods, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet pickup on Hillsborough Avenue at high speed on April 19 when he overtook a 1999 Dodge pickup just east of Double Branch Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Dodge, driven by 46-year-old Oscar J. Gonzalez of Tampa, was in the same lane.

The Chevrolet struck the Dodge's rear, causing both vehicles to spin out of control across Hillsborough Avenue, troopers say. Smith's pickup overturned; his front seat passenger, Colonna, was ejected from the vehicle.

She died at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Smith's blood-alcohol level was 0.224. Florida law presumes a driver impaired with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 or greater.

In addition to the DUI-manslaughter charge, he was charged with careless driving.

He posted $50,000 bail and was released from jail.
