NEW PORT RICHEY - The state and defense rested their cases Wednesday afternoon in the second-degree murder trial of Sharon Sprout.
Jurors will hear closing arguments this morning. Deliberations are expected to begin in the afternoon.
Sprout, 51, is accused in the July 2004 shooting death of her longtime boyfriend, Anthony Candiano. Prosecutors say Candiano, 64, was shot in the head as he slept inside the Regency Park home he shared with Sprout.
Assistant Public Defender Phil Cohen chose not make an opening statement Monday and rested his case without presenting evidence.
Assistant State Attorney Eva Vergos presented evidence this week that suggests Sprout killed Candiano because he refused to marry her and also planned to end the couple's 29-year relationship.
Sprout faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
