ZEPHYRHILLS - A public information workshop is set for Dec. 1 to answer questions and hear concerns about the Florida Department of Transportation's plans to convert U.S. 301 in Zephyrhills to a pair of one-way streets.
The $70 million project, scheduled for construction in 2015, would convert a 1.8-mile stretch of Gall Boulevard, also known as U.S. 301, into a one-way street for northbound traffic. Southbound traffic would be diverted to Sixth Street, which is already one way.
The DOT held official public hearings in 2001 when the project was in its early design phase. The workshop will give the public and business owners another chance to comment, but it is too late to change the design. The Federal Highway Administration has signed off on the project.
"The main point of the workshop is to see whether or not the community supports the project," DOT spokeswoman Kris Carson said.
Zephyrhills leaders must decide whether to back the one-way streets or forego the project, which is slated to receive $31 million in 2011 for right-of-way acquisition.
