USF's Gregory Gets Most Reps

TAMPA - University of South Florida QB Matt Grothe, who is still nursing an ankle injury, participated in some individual drills, but backup Grant Gregory got the bulk of the work during Thursday's practice.

"He Grothe and Grant will be ready to go," USF coach Jim Leavitt said. "Grant's really running the offense right now. Matt ran a little bit today. He'll go today quite a bit. I just want to wait another day for him, try to get him as strong as we can."

Thursday was the first day Grothe practiced since suffering a sprained ankle against Rutgers on Saturday. Gregory, a senior, has seen only mop-up duty this season, completing eight of 15 for 90 yards and one TD.

"Grant had a really good practice, he practiced really well," USF offensive coordinator Greg Gregory said. "The more work he's gotten, the better he's looked. He's gotten a lot of reps this week."

If Grothe and Gregory both were injured Sunday against UConn and unable to play, Leavitt said freshman Evan Landi would be the Bulls' next option as USF's No. 3 quarterback. Leavitt added freshman B.J. Daniels, who played earlier this season but the Bulls are trying to get a medical hardship, probably would not play in any circumstance.

Also, RT Danous Estenor (knee) and LT Jake Sims (ankle) did not practice.
