ST. PETERSBURG - St. Petersburg police are looking for a pack of teens they say are shooting blow darts at people from a car. So far, two people have been struck.
One victim was a 14-year-old boy walking the family dog in the 7200 block of 13th Avenue North, St. Petersburg police spokeswoman Jennifer Dawkins said. The dart pierced his skin, and he was taken to an area hospital to be checked out, Maj. Mike Puetz said.
The boy was hit Thursday. Three days earlier, a 43-year-old man riding his bicycle less than a dozen blocks away was hit with a dart. He didn't see it until he arrived home and saw the dart stuck in his shirt. The projectile did not penetrate the skin.
"By all accounts, the perpetrators of this are probably seeing this as a prank," Puetz said.
He noted the 14-year-old victim noticed the occupants of the car driving away were laughing.
Puetz said, however, the darts can cause a serious injury if one hits someone in the eye.
"We'd like to put a stop to this before it gets too far," he said.
The car used by the suspects is described as small and white with four doors and possibly a hatchback, Puetz said.
Anyone with information should call Detective Shannon Douglas at (727) 893-4963.
