ST. PETERSBURG - The Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists handed out its 2008 Griot Drum Awards at its annual banquet Thursday night at the Poynter Institute.
Award recipients are recognized for outstanding reporting and photography showcasing the life, times and stories of blacks in the Tampa Bay area.
Winners from the Tribune staff are:
•Photographer Fred Bellet took first place in three categories: photo deadline and sports news, photo sports feature and photo sports news.
•Reporter Sarah Hoye won first place in the print feature category and first place in the new media category.
•Reporter Anwar Richardson won first place for print sports feature.
•Reporter Nick Williams won second place for print sports feature.
•Photographer Joseph Brown earned second place in the new media category.
•Religion reporter Michelle Bearden won third place in the print feature category.
TBABJ, an affiliate of the National Association of Black Journalists, is made up of journalists and broadcasters from Hillsborough, Pinellas, Sarasota, Pasco, Polk and Manatee counties.
