Exercise guru Richard Simmons brought his signature combination of showbiz pizzazz and stratospheric enthusiasm to Tropicana Field on Thursday morning, where he led hundreds on the Senior Fun Walk.
"I'm a senior," Simmons told a local television station before he worked his way through his admirers, giving a hug to almost anyone within arm's length and to virtually everyone who asked for one.
"I'm 60 years old, and I want to be 70, and I want to be 80," he said.
Simmons then led his disciples through a series of stretches to the strains of a Judy Garland number before the walk and a signing planned for him.
"This is my first" walking event, said Nancy Hamrick, a 61-year-old retired postal worker from Palm Harbor. "I've been too young before. I just realized this year I am a senior."
Like many at the walk, Hamrick had been told of the importance of proper diet and exercise by her physician. "My doctor said, 'Get up and move,' that's for sure."
