DADE CITY - Former NFL player and Pasco High School star Darren Hambrick ended his latest legal saga by pleading guilty Thursday to one count of assault and one count of battery, both misdemeanors.

Hambrick, 33, of 38827 Coit Road, Lacoochee, entered his plea as part of an agreement with prosecutors that calls for him to serve 18 months of probation and pay $865 in fines and court costs.

Hambrick also must undergo an alcohol evaluation and any recommended treatment. He will be eligible to end his probation after nine months if he has met the conditions.

Hambrick was charged in April after a fight with longtime girlfriend Ileana Quiles. According to police reports, Hambrick pulled Quiles' hair, punched her head and struck her leg with a glass table lamp.

Hambrick and his brother, Troy, led Pasco High to its only state championship, in 1992. Darren Hambrick went on to play five seasons in the National Football League with Dallas, Carolina and Cleveland. His career ended in 2002.

Troy Hambrick, also a former NFL player, is serving five years in federal prison after pleading guilty in May to selling 78 grams of crack cocaine to an undercover informant.
