Giddins Earns National Honor

Armwood senior defensive lineman Ryne Giddins has been a well-respected player in Hillsborough County for quite some time. Now, that respect has reached a national level.

Hawks coach Sean Callahan said Thursday that Giddins will be named the CSTV National Defensive Player of the Year. Callahan said he was informed this week by renowned recruiting analyst Tom Lemming that Giddins was the player selected for the honor.

The official announcement is expected today, Callahan said. It will be the second national accolade this season for Giddins, who recently accepted his official invitation to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

TERPS SWIMMER GOES IRISH: Tampa Prep senior Grace Fred-lake verbally committed to Notre Dame.

Fredlake plans on signing her letter-of-intent at a ceremony today at the school.

The swim team captain and one of the area's top distance swimmers, Fredlake recently won a bronze medal at the Class 1A State Swimming and Diving Championships. She also placed fifth in the 200 individual medley. Fredlake, who also swims for Tampa Bay Aquatics, picked the Irish over Florida State, Indiana, Northwestern and Princeton.
