SEFFNER - Prior to Armwood beating Winter Haven 30-14 in the Class 4A region quarterfinals Friday, Hawks quarterback Mywan Jackson and running back Tavari Grant discussed big runs, and that is just what they accomplished.
Jackson sprinted 89 yards for a second-quarter touchdown and Grant ran one in from 80 yards in the third quarter as they led the Hawks to 398 yards rushing.
"He's my best friend and I went over to his house Thursday night and we said we both were going to break over 80," Jackson said.
"We've been working hard together," Grant added. "Thursday night we talked about trying to see who was going to make the record for the longest run."
The tandem ran for a combined 345 yards on 35 carries, with Jackson having one more yard rushing than Grant.
Armwood's defense was stifling, holding Winter Haven to 64 yards of offense in the first half. In the only scoring opportunity of the half, Alex Larue hit Devon Stewart on a screen for a 36-yard gain. But the team could go no further.
"Our kids don't like people scoring on them and it was a good way to go into the half," Armwood coach Sean Callahan said.
At the conclusion, the teams got into a fight and Armwood captain Justin Cabbagestalk was ejected.
Callahan said the referee told him he was going to write up Cabbagestalk, which means he will be ineligible for the next round of the playoffs.
