ORLANDO - On a chilly Friday night at Bill Spoone Stadium, Class 6A-6 runner-up Durant made the trip east on I-4 to play 6A-5 champion Dr. Phillips. But it was not a pleasant trip for the Cougars, who were making their first playoff appearance since 2003, as they suffered a season-ending defeat to the Panthers, 14-7.
The Panthers won the opening coin toss, but elected to kickoff to start the game. They stayed scoreless until five minutes left in the first quarter when Dr. Phillips quarterback Nico Ranieri threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Mike Milano to put the Panthers ahead 7-0.
The score stayed that way until the second quarter when a fumbled snap rolled all the way to the end zone where Durant defensive end Shane McDougall fell on the fumble to tie the game at 7. The score remained tied until Ranieri threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Shaw to put Dr. Phillips up 14-7 in the third quarter. And after that go-ahead score Durant had no answer for a Dr. Phillips defense that held them scoreless the rest of the game.
Ranieri had 128 total yards of offense along with two touchdown passes. Dr. Phillips running back Demetrius Hart had 189 rushing yards. Wide receiver Kenny Shaw finished with 104 total yards receiving with one touchdown for the Panthers.
Durant quarterback Je'twan Smith had 46 total yards of offense against a Panthers defensive line that put pressure on him all night.
