TAMPA - University of South Florida QB Matt Grothe (ankle) practiced without limitations Friday and will play Sunday night against Connecticut, Bulls coach Jim Leavitt said.
"I'm not concerned. I wanted him to throw Thursday a little bit. I didn't want him to run the offense; I just wanted him to throw," Leavitt said. "And Friday he did everything. He ran the ball a little bit, too. So that was good, and we still have two more days. It's good that we're playing Sunday night and not today. That would be tougher."
Grothe was in a protective boot until Tuesday and missed two practices before returning Thursday.
In other injury news, LT Jacob Sims (ankle) "is tentative. He's doing some work. We'll know more today," Leavitt said. Freshman Jeremiah Warren would step in if Sims is unable to play.
Freshman CB Quenton Washington (back), who sat out last week's game, is ready to go against UConn, Leavitt said.
JUST ONE MORE: Losing three straight games and four of its past five has put USF in a precarious position in terms of securing a bowl bid, which once seemed like a lock.
"We want to go out and win a game. It has been a few weeks since we have," Grothe said. "We need one more win to go to a bowl. We are worried about this week and getting that win so we can make it to wherever that may be. ... We are just worried about getting that one more win to get us over the hump. We need to get out of the hole."
