COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Everette Brown wasted no time in joining the 10-sack club for a single season Saturday night. The junior defensive end took Chris Turner to the ground on Maryland's first drive. He became the 13th Seminole to make at least that many sacks in a season and the first since Alonzo Jackson in 2002.
But that wasn't Brown's biggest play, nor was it his only sack. Brown stripped the football from running back Da'Rel Scott, which was picked up by Derek Nicholson and returned 22 yards for a touchdown with 9:19 remaining in the second quarter for a 14-0 lead.
Brown, who played both at defensive end and on the interior line, had 2.5 sacks by halftime. He added another in the second half and is fifth on FSU's single-season list with 12.5. He has 22.5 for his career, seventh in FSU history.
It is the third time in five weeks that Brown had at least three sacks.
RIGHT FOOT FORWARD
With Wake Forest losing to Boston College and Myron Rolle being named a Rhodes scholar, Saturday night was off to a good start for Florida State.
Few could have been more excited about Rolle's accomplishment than FSU President T.K. Wetherell. His athletic program faces sanctions from the NCAA because of an academic misconduct case. And FSU's campus police have been investigating a fight between FSU football players and an FSU fraternity.
"It's kind of unfair to put him in a box where he has to carry the load for everybody else," Wetherell said of Rolle. "But it certainly puts the right foot forward. Certainly running out on that field with 20 million people watching you on a nationally televised game ... it's a pretty significant statement."
INGRAM ONE UPS ROLLE
It's not a Rhodes Scholarship but Kenny Ingram did something Saturday night that Rolle would love to have this season. That would be an interception.
Ingram moved from strongside linebacker to spell him at rover until Rolle entered the game with 1:30 remaining in the first half. His interception early in the second quarter was the first for an FSU rover in 24 games. Rolle had a pick in the Emerald Bowl at the end of the 2006 season.
Andrews was coy throughout the week about his plans for the rover spot, although with backup Roosevelt Lawson getting limited work this season, Ingram seemed a probable solution. Cornerback Tony Carter was credited with tipping Chris Turner's pass on that play.
RICHARDSON'S RARE TOSS
Offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher has been suggesting that D'Vontrey Richardson was ready for more playing time. And he received it Saturday night in the first half.
Richardson ran three times from the quarterback spot in the first half. It was for just 9 yards. But with one pass for 19 yards to Preston Parker before halftime, that was the most touches in three games for Richardson.
