Cold fronts sweeping down from the north have been creating major problems for anglers trying to get out on the water and chase fish.
As the cold fronts arrive, they are bringing winds that have been keeping most boats on their trailers and in garages. For those who have managed to venture out on the water, the fishing has been hit or miss, with speckled perch being the main target for anglers.
As the weather steadies so will the fishing.
This past week it was hard to find many reports. Most of my regulars stayed home, although most are planning on taking advantage of the upcoming long weekend by getting out on the water.
If I were planning a trip, I would head to the Kissimmee chain depending on the wind forecast. If the winds continue to be strong I will fish the pits and rivers, where a little protection can be found.
Even Medard Reservoir can give up some wind breaks around the shorelines or even the cattail islands. Unfortunately, the Medard specks are still in the open deep waters, so in windy conditions you are in for a bumpy and potentially dangerous day on the water.
One overlooked type of fishing this time of year is bassing in deep heavy cover.
Work the cover just like you do flipping in the summer months, meaning a one-ounce sinker on 30-40 pound test with a jig or pegged soft plastic bait. Toss into the nastiest cover you can find and let the bait fall. Watch the line for any movement and set the hook hard.
